"After testing Ranch Systems on a 10 acre vineyard block in Saint Helena, Napa Valley in 2006, we decided to contract their services to remotely operate and monitor the whole 20-acre ranch. Ranch Systems allows us to operate irrigation valves, as well as to monitor soil moisture at different soil depths. Not only that it operates the 12 irrigation valves that we have in the ranch, but also collects very valuable information that we use in fine-tuning irrigation frequencies and amounts. "The Petaluma Gap has a very distinctive terroir, which is distinguished by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The combination of wind and the fog that comes in really makes it climatically on the edge from a grape growing point of view.

At Terra de Promissio, we work very hard to produce vineyard designated Pinot. We sell to 7 wineries, each with their own requirements. Our Pinot Noir Vineyard is a family run vineyard, with my father and mother working there every day.

Although my family is able to give the vineyard the attention it needs, we believed that more detailed information could help us better manage the 32 acres.

In 2006, we employed Ranch Systems to install wireless nodes in each of the 6 distinct blocks of the vineyard. The nodes allowed us the ability to visualize the vineyard data on the Internet in real time.

The data included: temperature, wind speed, dewpoint, soil moisture, and water flow. If for example, we saw changes in water flow or soil moisture, we were able to take immediate corrective action. This saved us time and money. Our winemakers were very happy to know that their grapes are being watched 24/7. Ranch Systems was a huge help in making 2006 a successful harvest!"
